Robot Overlordz is a semi-regular podcast about the possibilities of our future. Our society is changing and we all have a role to play in shaping those changes. The show digs into that, through the lens of pop culture reviews, political commentary, technology trends, and social norms. Episodes typically run about 30 minutes or so. The first series of Robot Overlordz was hosted by Mike Johnston and Matt Bolton, while the current Series 2 is hosted just by Mike.

Why Robot Overlordz?

It started with the idea of the Singularity. If you're not familiar with the Singularity, check out our very early episode 15 where our computers explain the concept. But in a nutshell, it's where technology starts advancing so far that we just cannot tell any more what will happen. One of the primary technological advancements of the Singularity is assumed to be AI (artificial intelligence). One possible scenario that everyone is familiar with (thanks to the Terminator and Matrix movies) is that AI will decide that humans are unnecessary and wipe us out.

But that seems like an awfully cynical and depressing worldview to us. Another possible scenario is that we will merge with our technology, in effect becoming the Machine. In that sense, we will be the Robot Overlordz.

No, seriously... why Robot Overlordz?

Oh, you mean what's with the Z?

Well, it turns that Mike had registered that Internet domain a long time ago. When we decided to start up a show, it wasn't in use, so we decided to use that.

What is Series 2?

Series 2 is the current version of the Robot Overlordz show. Just like society is changing, so too is the podcast. After over 300 episodes, Series 1 had run its course. It was time for a reboot. Thus, series 2 was born. Over the next few months, those changes will be taking effect. But there's no time like the present to get involved in shaping the future. The show has been downloaded in 74 countries, and 49 of the 50 United States (as well as the District Of Columbia aka Washington, D.C.). We set out to make a show for everyone that's excited, scared, anxious, and eager about the future and the possibilities that lie ahead of the human race. Who is Mike Johnston?

Mike is a Systems Engineer, Entrepreneur, TED enthusiast, avid reader and lifehacker. Back in 1997, one of his personal sites, The Synchronicity Arkive, was a viral sensation over the match between Pink Floyd's Dark Side Of The Moon and the movie The Wizard Of Oz. After a very long stint at a little company you may have heard of (AT&T), he decided to try starting a home automation/smart home company. Needless to say, it did not go well. But it was a huge learning experience and someday he may try again. In the meantime, he's an active part of the local TEDx community, Meetups, and still manages to find time to hang out with old friends. Mike leans slightly left and Heinlein Libertarian. Who is Matt Bolton?

Matt is the Marketing Manager for a technology company. He's been working in marketing since 1999 after several years as a Retail Manager. He spent 4 years in the United States Marine Corps as a crew member on a C-130 and also spent time working at Boeing as a Wiring Harness Engineer on the Apache Longbow helicopter. Matt is a Libertarian/Republican who leans far right on fiscal issues and somewhat center on most social issues. He can be reached via email at This email address is being protected from spambots.
