The police are supposed to protect society. They're on the front lines of one of the hardest jobs in the United States. And yet, with that responsibility should also come accountability. Unfortunately, that isn't always a quality that the police themselves embrace. In some states, including our home state of Illinois, the wiretapping laws have been used to supress criticism of police misconduct and brutality. Copyright is increasingly being used as a measure of control by the content industries, groups like the RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America) and the MPAA (Motion Picture Association of America). When new and innovative services are offered, particularly by Internet companies, consumers have found incredible new ways of viewing, sharing and trading the media that they love. The studios, and their lobbying organizations, don't see these new services as a better way of reaching their customers, but as a threat to the very business model that keeps them on top.
